Steam user and modder BMD has turned a beloved MOBA on its head. DOTA 2, the battle arena game from Valve, may not pull in as many players as League of Legends, but it is still the most played game on Steam. Now, BMD’s mod is offering a new way for people to experience the hype–a third-person shooter titled called Slaughter of the Ancients.
The mod is in its early stages, therefore the graphics look like something out of the mid ’90s. But, the video posted online shows a very different game than the MOBA you may be familiar with. The game’s basic concept is Capture the Flag, like we’ve seen in plenty of shooters such as Team Fortress 2 and Halo, except in the third-person perspective like Smite. Though the mod is an early work in progress, players can download and try Slaughter of the Ancients now in the Steam Workshop. The game supports 24-player games, and offers three different character classes to play as.
While the third-person shooter and flag capture multiplayer are nothing new, it is fitting to see someone build a new game out of DOTA2, considering that the original itself was a mod for Warcraft III. The entire MOBA genre is a testament to how the tinkering and experimentation of players with the games they love can create something new and exciting.
