Huh, they found a way to keep the story of Minority Report going.

This morning, The Hollywood Reporter revealed details about Fox’s planned television followup to the Steven Spielberg film, which will be a detective series set 10 years after the events of the 2002 movie of the same name.

If you’ll recall, the Tom Cruise thriller was set in a future where psychics – or “precogs” – would help the police identify and stop crimes before they happened. When Tom Cruise is set up to murder a man he’s never met, the program is exposed as flawed when it becomes clear it’s possible to game the precogs and fake future crimes.

The series would follow one of the precogs, a young man trying to lead a normal life in D.C. despite years of, you know, swimming in a vat of goo and identifying murders. When he encounters a detective haunted by mistakes in her own past, the two of them find a purpose in each other.

Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein will write the script, however no other talent has been attached yet.

I think it has potential! I say this as someone who loves the ideas at the heart of Spielberg’s film and Philip K.Dick’s original story): the collision of privacy and free will, law and “justice.” I’d have to imagine the cop character would be working with the precog off the books, which leaves the story open for all kinds of possibilities in terms of what someone would do if they had their own pet psychic.

The question is how will Fox support the series? They put a pretty strong push behind Almost Human, but that show experienced so much tumult in its first season (characters were drastically rewritten and the central mystery got a major, nonsensical overhaul with no real payoff) that the series never really found its footing. Hopefully, the Spielberg pedigree will allow this show to stand on its own.
