Back in July, we got some excellent news: Nintendo is getting ready to release the NES Classic Edition, a modern recreation of its first home video game console that’s been affectionately nicknamed the Mini NES. Now, “The Big N” has shared a new retro-style trailer that absolutely has our fingers twitching.
From the moment the ’80s synth music plays and the light-wash-denim-clad arm pops into frame to hit the power button, we’re completely on board. Of course, Nintendo didn’t just take the guts of an NES and put them into a smaller gray box; the new system has borrowed some features from contemporary emulators, like suspend points (of which it has four). It also has a 4:3 aspect ratio mode and a CRT filter, in order to more closely replicate the original experience.
For $59.99, you get the console, an NES-style controller (which will work with your Wii U too, by the way), the necessary cables (HDMI, not the red, yellow, and white ones), and all the old-school fun you could ever want. There’s a reason this product makes sense: Nostalgia aside, many NES games still hold up very well today, and if anything, they’re a refreshing reminder of a time when developers were catering to a more hardcore audience and therefore didn’t have to worry if their games were too difficult for casual players.
