Launch into Hyperspace with a Fan-Made Millennium Falcon Cockpit

Two types of beds can make a kid the coolest ever. The first is bunk beds. The second is a bed in the shape of something that isn’t a bed–like a race car, a castle, or a spaceship. And then when you become an adult, you’re expected to just get a real bed. But it’s okay, because that’s when you just use your adult money and create the other things. Case in point: Greg Dietrich has almost completed his journey to recreate a life-size Millennium Falcon cockpit from scratch.

Reported by Technabob, the Falcon bed featured in this video from Wired is situated in Dietrich’s own Mos Eisley spaceport of Huntsville, Alabama. He and volunteer Jake Polatty, among others, worked countless hours outside of work hours putting together this amazing construct. From the individual LED lights to the hyperdrive console, they tried to make everything as accurate as possible. According to Polatty, that was one of the harder parts. With the set changing for each movie, it was up to the builders to decide what the “definitive” cockpit would look like.

Upon completion of the cockpit, the next goal is to create the rest of the ship. With a build this massive, Dietrich says it comes down to three things: “time, space, and money.” If they put as much care into the rest of the ship as they are this cockpit, it will all be worth it.
