Michael Bay Is Bringing His Explosions to VR Now

If you’ve opened your computer or been on your phone at all this week, you know that E3 is going on. Everyone’s got video games on the brain, even Transformers director Michael Bay. He’s going to bring us a super action-packed, extra-flashy bit of virtual reality, so prepare yourselves. Bay has partnered with the Rogue Initiative studio to make a foray into the newish field of VR as a “strategic advisor.” Honestly, it’s kind of astounding that he hasn’t done this before. It seems to be a perfect fit… Unless you’re one of those people who get really nauseated from virtual reality. If so, you’re really going to need a big bucket for this one.

In a statement the Rogue Initiative stated, “The new collaboration will produce immersive, virtual adventures offering gritty, danger-close action coupled with Michael Bay’s signature style and storytelling that fans all over the world have come to expect from his blockbuster action films,” They plan to have VR and television projects for “Sony Playstation, Oculus, HTC Vive, Samsung GearVR, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, feature film, network and cable television.”

This certainly could be the beginning of a trend; major filmmakers taking on virtual reality. In fact, it seems like a natural progression. Even Steven Spielberg has talked about doing something in the arena. Considering the dramatic nature of video games and the immersion of virtual reality, it’s surprising we haven’t seen more of it. In a way, it might be a great way to change the landscape of games. Film and television directors are likely to bring more narrative to virtual reality in particular. Well, most of them.

Bay has often been criticized for style over substance. Still, the Rogue Initiative (which launched in February), explains on its website that they’re full of alumni from “Amblin Entertainment, Pixar, Dreamworks Animation, Sony Pictures, Disney, and Infinity Ward” and “creative executives and interactive media developers from New Regency, WEVR, Electronic Arts, Treyarch, Ready at Dawn, and Telltale Games.” That’s a pretty impressive-sounding team.

So, are you prepared for the some super-shiny, action-packed virtual reality from Michael Bay? Tweet me/us @JennaBusch/@Nerdist and let us know what you want to see from VR. Do you love it? Have you tried it? Does it make you lose your lunch? We want to know!
