METROID Goes 3DS in First Trailer for SAMUS RETURNS Remake

Metroid fans have been waiting years to see a continuation of the Metroid Prime series, and their patience was rewarded today when Nintendo confirmed the development of Metroid Prime 4 for the Switch. However, fans won’t have to wait long for their next Metroid fix, as Samus Aran is coming back later this year in a 3DS remake of Metroid II: Samus Returns.

At E3, Nintendo unveiled the first trailer for Metroid: Samus Returns, a completely reworked and re-imagined vision of the classic GameBoy title. Like its predecessor, Metroid: Samus Returns is a side scroller, but it isn’t limited to a 2D plane. Instead, the game will incorporate 3D effects and Samus will be able to turn her arm cannon a full 360-degrees.

The visuals in the trailer are stunning, and it appears to be far more than a simple remake of the original title. Many of Samus’ classic abilities will be incorporated into the gameplay, like the springball and the bomb jump. However, the game will also incorporate special features that let players mark their maps to return for later exploration, as well as teleportation stations to help Samus speed up her travels.

Two of the composers from Super Metroid have returned to provide the music for this game, and fans who purchase the special edition of Metroid: Samus Returns will also get a soundtrack compilation featuring music from this title and previous Metroid adventures.

Metroid: Samus Returns will be released on September 15th.
