Meryl Streep Wows With “Stay With Me”

“It’s about parents and children,” Stephen Sondheim says during the interview portion of this behind the scenes video for Into the Woods. And about parents and children it certainly seems to be when Meryl Streep‘s Witch sings “Stay With Me” to her daughter Rapunzel only moments later. Into the Woods seems to get better and better every time a new glimpse of the making is revealed.

Streep is no stranger to musicals, and “Stay With Me” fits her vocal range beautifully, so it’s no surprise that this snippet of documentary is making such a splash across the internet. The Witch she plays may seem to have many of the answers to the multitude of characters that people Into The Woods, but at the heart of her story is the daughter she wants to keep from the world. Everyone who knows the fairy tale knows that Rapunzel eventually escapes her tower by letting down her hair. It’s not often that we get to truly feel some pity for the witch who put her there but Streep may just take us to that place.

Into The Woods doesn’t open for another month but the PR blitz seems to be in full effect. Do you think we can expect more moments of musicality from the other stars? While we’re all familiar with Anna Kendrick’s vocal stylings (who hasn’t seen Pitch Perfect?) and Streep is proving again that her voice is phenomenal, there are still a number of stars to wonder over. Will Emily Blunt shine? How will Chris Pine fair? And what will the Big Bad Wolf sound like?

Are you as excited for this as we are? Tell us which number you’re looking forward to the most in the comments below.
