In the latest poster for Spy, Melissa McCarthy is the woman with the golden gun. In the latest trailer, however, she is channeling her inner Sterling Archer to save the world as we know it.
McCarthy has been on a roll for a little while now in Hollywood. While some will remember when she was playing the unassuming Sookie on Gilmore Girls, most others didn’t know much about her until her breakout role in Bridesmaids back in 2011. The raucous comedy, directed by Paul Feig, was hailed the all-female Hangover, and even earned McCarthy an Oscar nomination for her over-the-top character Megan. Since then she has been in high demand for films and seen more success with her CBS sitcom Mike & Molly. While not everyone of her films have seen huge box office success, it has not slowed her down or faltered the faith she and Feig have in each other. It has been enough for McCarthy to land a spot of the team in the rebooted Ghostbusters film that Feig will direct, and also gain a starring role in her own action comedy called Spy.
The site has covered the film extensively, especially the happenings at SXSW a few weeks ago, but now we are presented with a brand new trailer for the film. Following in the footsteps of classics such as Spies Like Us and Johnny English, Spy is the story of an unlikely woman having to step up and become a super spy in order to protect the world when no one else can. Check out the trailer above and read the official synopsis from 20th Century Fox below.
“Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agencyâs most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster.”
Spy hits theaters June 5th. Read our review from SXSW.
