Mel Brooks Talks About SPACEBALLS 2: THE SEARCH FOR MORE MONEY

When popular franchises release new material, it’s a chance for parodies of those franchises to step up. Star Wars has inspired its fair share of inspired parodies but perhaps none is more beloved than Mel BrooksSpaceballs. The 1987 film starring Brooks, John Candy, Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, and so many more is ridiculous and charming and maybe not entirely in the past. Lone Starr (Pullman) did say, “I wonder, will we ever see each other again?” Is that day here?

Brooks recently appeared on Adam Carolla’s Take a Knee podcast and when Carolla asked Brooks if the director would like to create another big movie, Brooks didn’t say no. The game of internet telephone has, as per usual, exaggerated Brooks’ statements, but Splitsider has a transcription of the Spaceballs 2 highlights from the pay-to-listen podcast:

“Maybe I could do another musical, maybe I could do another movie. I was thinking about Spaceballs the other day. In Spaceballs, in the movie, Bill Pullman says to me, Yogurt, just plain Yogurt, he says ‘Do you think we’ll ever meet again?’ and I [Yogurt] say ‘Well, I don’t know…maybe in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.’ And I’m thinking now, if I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out — maybe a couple of months later — I’d have a big weekend, you know? No matter what, even if it fell on its ass and didn’t get its money back…but that first weekend, the anticipation of seeing Spaceballs 2, would…I still have Daphne Zuniga and I still have Rick Moranis if he’d do it, and I’ve still got me.”

To summarize, Brooks basically says he’s up for it. That’s more or less what he told Parade in an interview last year. Though the cast has lost at least a couple of members, Moranis and Zuniga are still around. But note that Brooks doesn’t say he’s written a screenplay or that he’ll do it if Moranis on board. He makes it sound like an interesting prospect rather than a project currently in development. If Brooks does want to set a Spaceballs sequel in motion to hit a release date shortly after The Force Awakens, he’d need to dive in immediately. While I think some studio would jump at the chance to make Spaceballs 2 (sequels and reboots never seem to go out of fashion), I’m not getting my hopes up until Brooks sounds more committed.

I grew up without getting the opportunity to see movies. I remember Spaceballs being the first movie I saw where I realized what comedy was and I freakin’ LOVED it.
I’d definitely love to see another.

This would be amazing! It’s too bad we’ve lost a few actors but Jack Black could play Barf and Sarah Silverman voice Dot Matrix?

    • Jimi says:

I think Jack Burp should be Burp the son of Barf. I mean.. They could just explain it with dog years.. y’know? I like the Sarah Silverman idea as well.. She got.. even have a scene where Burp carries her busted pieces around on his back ala Empire.

  8. Lisa Brunson says:

Let me put it this way… If this movie does not come out, when I die I’ll have unfinished business and ill haunt the crap out of Mel Brooks until the movie becomes a reality.

I’d like to see anything Mel Brooks puts out. History of the world part 2? Come on “Jews In Space” and “Hitler on Ice” it’s gold. Space balls 2 would be amazing to see. Hopefully we something from Brooks

  14. klue says:

Pretty sure Moranis has been approached about a couple things in recent years, Ghostbusters in particular, and he’s staunchly refused to come out of retirement for any of them. Something tells me the outcome would be the same here.

  15. Lisa says:

    hell yes

  16. Derek Wheeler says:

As long as it’s not like the cartoon. I don’t know how much Mel Brooks was involved in that but it was an attempt to redo other sci fi movies with space ball characters but didn’t quite mesh right.

I think as long as Mel Brooks is directly involved it would be brilliant. The man is a genius.
