Mel Brooks Makes His Mark on TCL Chinese Theatre

It’s good to be the king! Comedy legend Mel Brooks has put his hand and footprints in cement to commemorate his contribution to the entertainment industry, joining the likes of Meryl Streep, Jim Carrey and Robert Zemeckis, just to name a few. Is anyone else amazed that it has taken this long for Brooks to take part in the ceremony?

In addition to leaving his prints in front of the historic Chinese Theatre, Brooks’ classic comedy Young Frankenstein (“That’s Fronkensteen”) celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year and will be released on Blu-ray tomorrow. Brooks tweeted his delight after the ceremony and if you look closely, you may notice a little something extra…

I probably don’t need to tell you that Brooks is a comedy legend, having worked in film, television and theater since the late 1940s. In addition to Young Frankenstein, he is responsible for films like The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs and the highly undervalued Robin Hood: Men In Tights. (Really, you should watch Men In Tights again. It’s pretty wonderful.) Brooks went on to adapt both The Producers and Young Frankenstein into very successful Broadway musicals and wrote on television for Sid Caesar and the series Get Smart. Brooks also secretly produced classic genre films like David Lynch’s The Elephant Man and David Cronenberg’s The Fly.

Young Frankenstein starring Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman and Peter Boyle makes its Blu-ray debut on Tuesday, September 9.
