Mega Ran Raps Flawlessly in “Mackerel Sky” Music Video (Premiere)

When Mega Ran appeared on the Nerdist Music panel at SXSW, he had keen insights into the state of the music industry, something that had clearly been irking him. As an independent musician, he was wary of how slowly the cogs of marketing/distribution/sales potentially turn. By the time a team of execs figured out a new viral trend or the latest app, chances were that the artists were already onto the next one. In short, he seemed happy to be able to do things at his own pace, with whatever resources he had at hand.

In his brand-new music video for “Mackerel Sky,” — a reference to an incoming storm — Ran addresses some of these same topics, but this time with a ferocious flow. As always, the nerdcore rapper goes in hard, referencing the state of the systems he sees around him and the deficit between the world he actually occupies: “Shame that the so called experts look like fools when the market is passing them by….” Over a very twitchy, nerve-racking beat by AF THE NAYSAYER, Mega Ran proves once again that he is so much more than just a “nerdy” rapper. Dude is talented, and he proves it time and again with each successive music video.

The visuals here are tight as well. Luis “ElJayBeats” Perez creates an atmosphere of impending doom and nagging anxieties with close shots, flickering background visuals, and stray flashes of animation. Another great addition to all the music videos that have trickled out from Ran’s album, RNDM.

If you are digging the new video for the track and need some more Mega Ran in your life — good news! He is going on tour with MC Lars and you can check those dates in the tour poster below.
