Meet the Jedi Master of Geeky Pancakes

Making pancakes can be a form of art. Not for me, though. The only way my pancakes take on the shape of something other than a blob is if I use molds. Nathan Shields, however, doesn’t need no stinking molds. I’m convinced he’s a wizard, a Jedi Master, or a superhero because he creates portraits and images that are too good to be made from pancake batter. He’s made Star Wars Sith lords, Maleficent, characters from The Walking Dead, fractals, and so much more.

The illustrator and math teacher started making pancakes with his kids, and his creations have gotten more intricate over time. He uses wide mouth squeeze bottles to squirt the pancake batter onto a nonstick griddle and an extra wide spatula to flip his edible masterpieces. Use too small of a spatula and you’ll just end up ripping them in half. For a long time, I just marveled at the photos of Shields’ pancakes, but he started a YouTube channel about six months ago and you can watch the magic happen. It looks deceptively simple to make Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, and Count Dooku out of pancake batter. Look:

See? Sorcerery! It’s like he’s following an invisible outline on the griddle. A few other examples of Shields’ work:

When he’s not whipping up characters from pop culture or fractals, he’s making plants, animals, and everything in between. He posts new pancake designs and videos at least once a week, and while I don’t imagine I’ll ever put in the time and effort necessary to make my pancakes look like tauntauns, Shields’ work does make me want to experiment with breakfast.
