Meet The Doctor’s New Companion

We have a new Doctor Who companion.

Meet Jenna-Louise Coleman, who’ll become the new companion in the next Christmas special. What do we know about her? She’s been in U.K. TV soap operas Emmerdale and Waterloo Road, Captain America: The First Avenger, the upcoming Titanic miniseries, and other stuff.

This is her:

In the release, which describes Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill’s exit a “heartbreaking departure after one final series of rollercoaster voyages,” Coleman says, “I’m beyond excited, I can’t wait to get cracking; working alongside Matt I know is going to be enormous fun and a huge adventure.”

In the same release, Steven Moffat says, “It always seems impossible when you start casting these parts, but when we saw Matt and Jenna together, we knew we had our girl. She’s funny and clever and exactly mad enough to step on board the TARDIS. It’s not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it’s about to happen. Jenna is going to lead him his merriest dance yet. And that’s all you’re getting for now. Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.”

So… you good with this? Like you have a choice. Anyway, you’ll get to decide at the end of the year.

UPDATE: At today’s press conference, Steven Moffat said that Amy and Rory will leave in the fifth episode of the season in an encounter with the Weeping Angels and he said “not everyone gets out alive, and I mean it this time.” Uh oh. Also, series 7 will include 14 episodes, six in 2012 and eight in 2013. Plan your life accordingly.

    So looking forward to it!!!

  2. Jenny says:

I agree with Abbey it will be extremely hard for people to like her if Amy dies. I wish the new companion good luck

  3. Kathleen says:

I swear, she’s gonna be Susan.

  4. Pagan says:

@JDS – What’s the matter with you? That’s just rude, inappropriate, and just plain mean, dude.

  5. Pixie says:

Well, we still don’t know if she’ll be looking like herself on the show, she just might turn out to be an alien! That would be quite fantastic if that happened, especially if they make her up and literally make her look alien. Whatever happens, I look forward to seeing her on the show.

  6. Vincent S says:

omg… shudn’t have looked at the update. D: now I know when the crapola hits the fan next season.

  7. Abbey says:

I am sure the new girl will do fine. I think she will have it 100x harder when it comes to winning people over if Amy dies though.

Good luck to her though. As long as she isn’t “typical” for lack of a better word, I will like her just fine.

  8. Louie says:

What about River Song? Will we see more of her?

  9. Aj says:

As much as I wish I didn’t read that thing about the “encounter with the weeping angels” thing, considering Karen has said before that when she leaves Who, she wants it to be as final as possible, not open-ended.
(So no “lock her in a parallel universe & then bring her back 2 seasons later somehow”) Which leads me to believe that Rory might not be the one to die for a change.
As for the new companion, all the best to her! We’ve had the introduction of a new companion during a christmas special before, so I look forward to seeing what her character will bring to the show!

  10. Ray says:

Why can’t we just have a normal looking companion. Lets break the trend of a 20 something model hanging out with the Doctor. Why not shock the audience and give us a male companion or an Alien? This is a Sci-fi show about the infinite adventures of a time traveling alien, lets see something fantastic!

  11. LauraH says:

@Rogue I agree whole heartedly (which spell check isn’t accepting).

  12. JDS says:

    *Down’s Syndrome. Ooops.

  13. Ryan says:

I’m going to assume the angels get Rorey and Amy can’t continue on without him.

That or some form of sacrifice is involved for the others to get out alive. Either way, too much information, Moffat.

  14. JDS says:

She looks like a chubby Mexican with down syndrome. NOT that that’s a “bad” thing, per se……just sayin’.

  15. Rogue says:

I have mixed feelings about this gal… mainly how she looks in a basic Google Image search. Its like a mix of Disney Tween and a girl you’d see prancing about a Bravo Reality TV show. What happened to the simple beauty they looked for in Rose, Martha, Donna and Amy? They didn’t bend to the Hollywood look..

Eh, we’ll see I guess. I’ll glumly accept it if the plot stays riveting.

  16. Kevin says:

I’m not going to decide whether I like her or not until I she her on the show. I hope Amy is the one that doesn’t make it out alive, I like her but Rory has died too many times already.

  17. Mike says:

@StuartB Snark aside, that’s essentially exactly what they count companions as. Hence why Donna’s Grandfather is a companion.

  18. Kyle Anderson says:

    @StuartB –

What do you mean? She’s going to be the new full time companion starting with the Christmas special, which this year will come in the middle of the series as opposed to the end. She’s not just a one-off.

  19. John says:

Yikes another split season, got to say not a fan of that. Will be very sad to see Amy and Rory go, and hopefully they don’t meet an untimely fate! Will be interesting to meet our new companion however I don’t need another girl to fall in love with the Doctor I think we’ve beaten that plot horse to death..

  20. AAP says:

Yikes… please “Spoiler” tag the update.

  21. StuartB says:

Do we really count anyone who steps on board the Tardis as a “companion” now?

  22. Miguel says:

My mantra with Steven Moffat is more along the lines of “There will be tears”.

  23. Paxie says:

Regarding the “heartbreaking” exit and that “not everyone gets out alive”, I tend to refer back to the following mantra: In Moffat We Trust and the Moffat Lies.

I’m sure my fellow Sherlockians will agree with this.

  24. Vist says:

If she didn’t have the accent I would swear she was over a dozen chicks I’ve met in Miami.

  25. Ben Z says:

As long as it means more Matt Smith as The Doctor and more episodes, I’m for almost anything.
