Meet the Citizens of District 13 in THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 Posters

The Capitol is trying to get the Districts of Panem and us on their side before the November release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (a/k/a the longest movie title in the world), but District 13 isn’t having it. President Coin (Julianne Moore) and Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) are leveraging Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) symbol and using her to lead their charge against the Capitol. To help send their message of resistance, the citizens of District 13 recently hacked the Capitol’s website and showcased photos of their leaders.

The six posters are stark but successfully serve the purpose of showing all of Panem that they are not alone in pushing back. The images feature Beetee (Jeffrey Wright), Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), Plutarch, Effie (Elizabeth Banks), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and President Coin. The shades of gray and bland outfits paint a no-nonsense picture of the District 13 leaders and stand in stark contrast to President Snow’s messages. The lack of regal overtures makes them more relatable. The posters seem to say, “We are just like you, and we are standing up against the Capitol. If we can do it, you can do it.”

And though the posters all look similar, closer examination shows some differences. For example, President Coin’s is the only image that features the Mockingjay. It appears as though she’s trying to send a message to Panem that she is on par with Katniss. Also, be sure to take a close look at the poster featuring Effie Trinket. Her role is being expanded in the film, and her presence in these poster suggests she may have a key part to pay in the rebellion. Effie was included in the Mockingjay book but only barely. Anyway, as you can see in her portrait, she’s managed to take the dull clothing of District 13 and add some Effie flair. It’s one of many reasons you can’t help but warm to her.

That poster of Phillip Seymour Hoffman breaks my heart into a million pieces, stomps on it and then hands it back all worthless and pitiful.  Goddamn I miss him.
