Nokia Bringing Back Neo’s Banana Phone from THE MATRIX

Nostalgia sells, but normally what companies are peddling is the idea of a bygone era. But if you want something more tangible–an item that is a literal callback to the past– then whoa, Nokia just dialed up the perfect item for you. Because they are bringing back their banana cellphone, the one Morpheus sent to Neo in The Matrix.

We first learned about Nokia’s new throwback 8110 4G curved phone with a protective cover you can slide back and forth to answer and end a call at The Verge. It’s based on the same one made famous when Neo received it in a package from Morpheus. While this retro device is not a smartphone, it definitely has seen some upgrades in the last two decades. You “can surf, chat and stream faster with 4G LTE,” it also comes with a “wireless Hotspot feature,” four gigs of storage, and 512MB of RAM. Although it does have some classic Nokia elements too, like Snake (yes!) and a 2 megapixel camera (..oh).

The banana phone’s price might be its most a-peeling feature though, retailing for $97, and is available in black, like the one Neo answered, and yellow, which is way cooler. Seriously, Neo’s phone was the best, but it would have been even better if it had been yellow.

If we had heard there was a new reboot related to The Matrix we probably wouldn’t have been that excited. But this is the kind of nostalgia we can really come to grips with.

For now there is no phone, but Nokia’s 8110 4G will be available this May.
