MASS EFFECT: ANDROMEDA Designer Unleashes Bizarre Animated Short, TANK HEAD

In his day job, Richard Boylan is the cinematic designer on the highly anticipated Mass Effect: Andromeda. However, Boylan has a far more personal vision to share with fans, and he’s already gotten started with Tank Head, the first in what may be a series of experimental animated shorts.

Via i09, Boylan released the first episode of Tank Head last week, and it’s definitely a trip. We’re not really sure if there is a plot, but the short follows an unnamed man who awakens in the middle of a war zone filled with inhuman creatures and giant freakin’ angels before he is saved by a giant man with a tank for a head. Tank Head goes on to fight the angels, possibly accepting the rescued man as his new pilot in the process. It’s not the most straightforward story that we’ve seen, and the rotoscope inspired animation has a very disorienting affect.

Boylan doesn’t seem to be inclined to reveal much of anything about Tank Head. “I’d rather let people invent their own meaning behind the imagery,” explained Boylan during a very short interview with i09. One tidbit that was revealed is that each episode of Tank Head will have its own visual style. However, Boylan wasn’t sure how many episodes it will run, nor does it have a firm release schedule.

On his YouTube page, Boylan added that “I’m hoping to finish another short in the next few weeks, time-permitting.” We are very curious to see what he comes up with next.
