The Hood Internet have been bringing us countless mashup bangers since the halcyon days of 2007, when they could have feasibly made a mashup featuring “Fergalicious.” Thank god that never happened, allowing the formidable mashup duo from Chicago to continue to have a career synthesizing a wide variety of surprising anthems.

For today’s edition of Mashup Mondays, I selected The Hood Internet’s “Tryout”, which features the blissfully ethereal instrumental track from Spoon’s excellent song “Inside Out” and leans on up-and-coming rapper Dej Loaf for cocky vocals. On paper this sounded like it would be a totally bizarre mess, but it oddly holds its own as a piece of cloud rap, which was de rigueur but a few years ago. It is pretty, harsh, and completely addicting, sort of like an over-steeped green tea.
