Mary Poppins Actually Explains Yondu’s Arrow, Y’all!

Yondu, Guardians of the Galaxy‘s blue-skinned Ravager captain, has arguably one of the coolest movie weapons in recent sci-fi history. Like the iconic lightsaber or Wolverine’s (nearly) indestructible claws, Yondu’s arrow is unique, interesting, and powerful. At the whim of a whistle, the arrow can be directed to fly through what seems like any material. But it’s hard to say just how powerful the arrow is without some comparison. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 we got one — Mary Poppins, y’all!

In my latest Because Science, I’m using one of the best scenes in the most recent Marvel movie to figure out exactly how strong Yondu’s “yaka arrow” is–that is, how much thrust it can produce–so that we have some idea of what materials the arrow could or could not go through.

I want spoil anything here, but it turns out that Mary Poppins is pretty cool, and allows us to give some figures for the feats of the arrow. Combine an estimation of its thrust with how sharp the arrow is and we’ll know whether or not the weapon could make it through steel, stone, and bone.
