Mary Poppins Meets Death Metal In This Cover of ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’

Oh, death metal, the most misunderstood of all of the musical genres. Sure the makeup is macabre, the clothing is off-putting, and every band’s logo looks like a thorn bush, but they have their softer sides as well. YouTuber Andy Rehfeldt has offered to show this softer side of these dark princes and princesses with his newest cover song.

No, the name Andy Rehfeldt may not be entirely familiar to you, but there is a very good chance that you have seen or heard one of his songs. Andy is a Los-Angeles-based musician and composer who writes music for film and television programs with Endless Noise Music and Sound Design. A few years ago, however, Andy started a YouTube channel and began showcasing some of his music in a different fashion. While on down time in the studio he would use professionally, Rehfeldt would transpose popular songs from one genre of music to another. Rehfeldt has created Radio Disney versions of Slipknot, Jazz versions of KISS, and even heavy metal versions of Beyoncé, and in the process gained viral notoriety.

In his newest video, Rehfeldt has set his sights on genre-swapping a song from a popular movie instead of from a popular artist. His death metal version of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”, the iconic Mary Poppins tune, is a little bit different from some of his previous songs, requiring an original recording of the vocals, along with the music. Sadly, our dreams of a Julie Andrews led metal band have not been realized here, but it is the closest we have gotten so far. It’s not my place to say whether it is a good cover or not, but it certainly is fun.

Let us know in the comments section what other Rehfeldt covers you like, or what songs you would like to see get covered in the future.

Andy Rehfeldt opened me to my favorite new genre, if you can call it that. After that, I found UMC, who does something similar most of the time. It’s a duo who takes vocal tracks and adds a layer of metal. “Happy”, “Wake Me Up”, and “Can’t Hold Us” are done well. Some have original vocals like “Timber”, a Ke$ha song, made actually listenable. Brian Storm does the vocals. Speaking of Brian Storm…
MMC is another duo, except full covers. They covered songs like “Fancy” (how do you not want to hear a grown man growl the word fancy?), and “Thriller”.
Andrew Baena is another one. He usually enlists the vocal work of Brian Storm as well, and made some songs listenable like “Wrecking Ball” and “Dark Horse”. Two more great songs.
Finally, my absolute favorite, Leo Moracchioli, from Frog Leap Studios. Just watching the videos are sure to put a smile on your face. His mannerisms are just perfect. “Like a Virgin”, “Uptown Funk”, “Rolling in the Deep”, “Poker Face”, “Let it Go”, “Shake it Off”, “All about that Bass”, and “Roar” are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how much awesome is contained within.
I have Andy Rehfeldt to thank for a bored YouTube search and “Conway Twitty Sings Death Metal”. You’ve opened me up to whatever this genre can be called. Thank you.
