Marvel’s Squirrel Girl is No Longer a Mutant

Marvel Comics promised that things were going to change after Secret Wars, but I don’t think anyone expected this. In the first issue of Marvel’s All-New, All-Different relaunch of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Doreen Green a.k.a. Squirrel Girl was outed as not being a mutant…which is kind of a surprise considering that her very first appearance in 1988 established that she was one!

As conceived by Steve Ditko and Will Murray, Squirrel Girl is a light-hearted Marvel heroine whose profile has rapidly grown in the last few years. She was a supporting character in Brian Michael Bendis’ New Avengers, and an actual Avenger in the newly relaunched New Avengers series by Al Ewing. Squirrel Girl also received her first ongoing series earlier this year by the creative team of Ryan North and Erica Henderson.

In fact, it’s North and Henderson who deliver the retcon of Squirrel Girl’s origin on the page posted below.

Squirrel Girl is not a mutant

What does this change mean? Well, if Squirrel Girl is no longer a mutant and was never a member of the X-Men, that would seem to open the door for her to eventually appear in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe in some capacity. (Hmmm…Inhumans, perhaps?) It’s long been rumored that Marvel and Fox have been feuding for years over the rights to certain X-Men related characters, which may have also been behind the recent revelation that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver aren’t the children of Magneto. Now we just have to wait and see if there are larger plans for Squirrel Girl when it comes to the MCU.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl # 1 was released today in comic book stores everywhere.

Comic fans, how do you feel about Marvel’s mutants losing Squirrel Girl as one of their own? Share your thoughts below!
