Marvel’s RUNAWAYS Series is Coming to Hulu

The television side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding beyond ABC and Netflix, as it’s just been announced that Runaways, based on Brian K. Vaughan‘s and Adrian Alphona‘s celebrated Marvel series from the early 2000’s, is coming to Hulu. The series is being spearheaded by Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, together with Marvel Television and ABC Signature. According to Deadline, the order is for a pilot plus additional scripts, and a probable full-season greenlight.

The original Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona comic started back in 2003, and ran through four different volumes, including one by Joss Whedon. The most recent volume was a mini-series which came out in 2015 tied to Marvel’s Secret Wars event. The original comics were about a group of teenagers who find out that their parents are actually a group of super villains called the Pride, and runaway together to set their own path in life, even though they’ve discovered they have inherited their parent’s super powers.

It seems the Hulu show will be sticking to the basic premise of the comics, as according to the original article, Runaways will tell the story of “six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against a common foe – their parents.” In a statement, Josh Schwartz said “I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life.”

After the success of the Iron Man movie back in 2008, Runaways was one of the films initially announced as a follow-up for Marvel Studios. But despite many false starts over the years, it never came to pass, and Marvel Studios seemingly shelved plans for a feature film sometime in 2013. Runaways is maybe one of the Marvel properties that is most suited for the small screen, so maybe this all worked out for the best.
