While Marvelâs Mockingbird has previously co-headlined the Hawkeye & Mockingbird series, sheâs never had her own ongoing comic…until now. Marvel has announced that a Mockingbird series is on tap for next year, with writer Chelsea Cain and artist Kate Niemczyk.
Cain wrote the S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary Mockingbird one-shot earlier this year, and she is also the author of the popular Gretchen Lowell novel series that began in 2007 with Heartsick.
â[Mockingbirdâs] been really underserved by the Marvel Universe,â said Cain during an interview with Marvel. âSheâs always appeared in other peopleâs stories, serving their narratives. So I love the idea of giving her a chance to be the center of a story and to really have some agency.â
Cainâs Mockingbird series will follow up on Brian Michael Bendisâ New Avengers run. Or more specifically, it was a story where Nick Fury injected Bobbi âMockingbirdâ Morse with a mixture of the Super Soldier Serum and the Infinity Formula to save her life.
âSheâs got to go in every week for a medical check-up,â explained Cain. âAnd I loved the idea of this medical clinic for superheroesâa place where they go to get stitched up and get their Prozac refilled. And the waiting room would be full of bored heroes leafing through old issues of âUs Weekly.â Would Bobbi uncover a conspiracy in that sort of environment? Well, she is good at ferreting out conspiracies having been subjected to them a number of times herself. Frankly sheâs a little sensitive about that. But the books will also show Bobbi on her personal time, and off having Bond-level adventuresâthe Roger Moore years.â
Where Mockingbird goes, her ex-husbands are sure to follow. Both Hawkeye and Lance Hunter will make guest appearances in the Mockingbird series. Hunter was recently retconned into Mockingbirdâs history to match the charactersâ depictions in Marvelâs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; which features Adrianne Palicki as Mockingbird and Nick Blood as Hunter. Palicki and Blood are also slated to star in Marvelâs Most Wanted, a pilot that could become Marvelâs third television series on ABC.
