Marvel/Netflix’s LUKE CAGE Will Tackle the Issues

When you think Marvel, you think cinematic universes, colorful action, and quips galore! But starting with their first Netflix show, Daredevil—and continuing with last year’s Jessica Jones—the studio has taken steps towards something deeper, more modern, and more meaningful. And now, word’s broken that the forthcoming Luke Cage will push things even further, becoming Marvel‘s most politically-charged, socially-conscious story yet!

Last week, a batch of leaked set photos showed the hero, unarmed and wearing a very-evocative grey hoodie, facing off against two police officers—and winding up with a few bullet holes in his impenetrable back. And now this morning, Birth.Movies.Death has reported that police violence won’t be the only subject tackled over the season, but instead a whole bevy of well-rounded topics: from differing views on the n-word in the black community, to black-on-black crime, and the systemic roots behind these issues.

So far, there doesn’t seem to be a subject the show is willing to back down from confronting, and all through the lens of genre storytelling! Great news, as Marvel‘s comic books have a long history with addressing the world’s problems and making them easy to digest, all while creating cathartic stories in which heroes can triumph over evil. If nothing else, it’s a call-back to one of the greatest things about Marvel, and genre stories as a whole — and we can’t wait to see what the company does with Luke Cage.

Thanks for watching today’s show, don’t miss the latest Dan Cave and our EXCLUSIVE (troll-y) reveal of the next half-decade of Star Wars movie titles, and let us know in the comments below what social issues you think the next Netflix show, Iron Fist, might tackle!
