Marvel Teases a New RUNAWAYS Comic Book Series

It’s been nearly a decade since Marvel‘s Runaways had their own ongoing comic book series. But with a live-action series heading to Hulu next year, it seems that the Runaways will be making a comeback in the Marvel Universe much sooner than expected.

Marvel has released a teaser image of Nico Minoru which strongly suggests that a new Runaways series is about to be announced. Additionally, Nico looks noticeably older in this image than she has previously been depicted.

Runaways Nico Teaser

Out of all of the teenage Runaways, Nico has had the highest profile since the third volume of the series came to an end in 2009. Nico was prominently featured in both Avengers Arena and Avengers Undercover, as well as a member of A-Force, the all-female Avengers team.

As alluded to in the image, Nico’s Staff of One has a pretty noticeable drawback: she can only use each spell once. The phrase “kissing the wrong person” suggests that the new series may also establish Nico as bisexual. Nico’s most recent relationship was with Alex Wilder, the former leader of the Runaways who has reinvented himself as a villain. The most intriguing part of the new image is that it implies that Nico is ready to take on the role of a mentor as well as a leader. “Looking for somebody to save” also suggests that the team may add a few members, or at least expand its reach.

The creative team for the new Runaways series has not been announced, but it will likely debut later this year.
