The SPIDER-MAN Shortlist: Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, & More

As Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron prepares to dominate box offices all over the free-thinking world, nerds everywhere only have one question on their mind: Who is playing Spider-Man? Sure, we’re excited about seeing The Vision take flight and hearing James Spader’s dulcet tones erupt from Marvel’s maniacal murderbot, but we won’t be satisfied until we know every last detail about the future. According to The Wrap, we may know the identity of the next person to play the Wall-Crawler sooner rather than later.

Evidently, Marvel and Sony Pictures have winnowed down their list of candidates to a group of young actors including Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game), Liam James (The Way, Way Back), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar), and Tom Holland (Wolf Hall). Sony is expected to make a decision within the next two to three weeks after making test offers to a handful of young actors. The initial report notes that none of these actors have received offers yet, but they are “strong contenders who are definitely in the mix as of right now.”

The actors, ranging in ages from 18 to 20, could all conceivable play high school-aged Peter Parker, which is in keeping with what Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed in a recent interview. By creating a younger version of Peter Parker, they can have franchise star who can grow up into the role along with the character a la Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter.

It is still very early in the casting process and a final deal is not expected anytime soon. Though Spider-Man is expected to make a cameo appearance in Captain America: Civil War, those scenes likely won’t shoot until June at the earliest. Naturally, Sony and Marvel will want to take their time to find the perfect candidate since he will be an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for many years to come. Speaking of which, the new standalone Spider-Man film makes its way to theaters on July 28, 2017, so you’ll have plenty of time to mull over Marvel’s eventual decision.
