What You Need to Know About MARVEL RISING: INITIATION’s Heroes

When a comic book publisher has been around for almost 80 years it’s only natural that its characters will be reimagined, changed, and reinvented many times. Marvel’s newest take on some of its classic and more contemporary characters is Marvel Rising: Initiation, coming to Disney XD. The new series of digital shorts sees Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Ghost-Spider, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fan favorite Quake, and Rayshaun Lucas’ Patriot attempt to find the culprit who killed a young boy–even if the culprit might be one of them. Here’s everything you need to know about the young heroes at the center of Marvel Rising: Initiation:

Ms. Marvel

Kamala Khan is one of Marvel’s most popular heroes. In Marvel Rising: Initiation the brilliant Muslim teen is as lovely as ever. A supportive friend, doting daughter, and purveyor of truth and justice, Kamala never shies away from what’s right even if it’s not easy…or legal. Often seen alongside her newly minted crime fighting partner Doreen, a.k.a. the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Ms. Marvel is not to be messed with.

Squirrel Girl

A firm fan favorite, Doreen Green rose to prominence as the titular hero in the 2014 comic The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, in which she beat all kinds of bad guys including notorious planet-eater Galactus–though she’s yet to face down any foes quite that fearsome in Marvel Rising: Initiation. She’s a team player who isn’t afraid to break the rules when necessary, and she’s always accompanied by her squirrel sidekick Tippy-Toe and a lot of other squirrelly buds.

Quake

A powerful Inhuman with seismic abilities, Daisy Johnson is most well known as a vital part of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Quake is on the hunt for the notorious and murderous vigilante turned criminal Ghost-Spider in Initiation. But all is not what it seems! Though Quake is aligned with S.H.I.E.L.D., she follows her gut and makes sure she’s getting the right perp.

Ghost-Spider

You might know her as Spider-Gwen, but in the world of Marvel Rising: Initiation and in current comic continuity, she’s Ghost-Spider. Things are not going well for her in the series. Arguably the show’s main character, Gwen Stacy is a vigilante and rock band drummer extraordinaire who’s also the daughter of the chief of police. Oh, and she’s just been framed for her best friend’s murder.

Patriot

The second character to wear the mantle of Patriot, Rayshaun Lucas was trained by Captain America himself, which comes with pros and cons. Patriot is a fantastic fighter and loves protecting people, but he can be a bit of a stickler for the rules when it comes to catching criminals. Working alongside Quake, Rayshaun is another young hero who’s working for S.H.I.E.L.D. as the series starts, but finds himself questioning his allegiances when he realizes that they may be hunting down the wrong (spider) woman.
