Martin Freeman’s Role in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Revealed

Captain America: Civil War made the cover of Empire Magazine this month, and the feature story has revealed some tantalizing intel on one of this year’s biggest superhero showdowns. After months of speculation, we now know which character Martin Freeman is playing in Civil War, and it’s someone whom Black Panther fans should probably already be familiar with.

Freeman will play Everett K. Ross, a character who was introduced in Christopher Priest’s Black Panther run as the U.S. State Department’s liaison to King T’Challa, a.k.a. the Black Panther. For comparison’s sake, here’s what Ross looks like in the comics.

Everett K Ross

Within the Marvel Universe, Ross was largely played as a comic relief character and he proved to be a true friend to T’Challa. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ross will be working for the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre and his alignment will be less clear.

“He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes’ power,” said Freeman in a previous interview with Bad Taste IT. “So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another.”

According to the Empire report, Freeman will likely reprise his role for the Black Panther movie. That would mean that Marvel now has two confirmed performers for that film: Freeman and Chadwick Boseman, who will play the Black Panther. Presumably, Black Panther will also feature Andy Serkis reprising his role as Ulysses Klaw from Avengers: Age of Ultron, because Klaw is one of Black Panther’s greatest adversaries.

Captain America: Civil War hits on May 6. The Black Panther movie will follow on July 6, 2018.
