Marvel Returns to the ’40s for “Agent Carter”

On Friday night of Comic-Con, a screening was held at San Diego’s Reading Cinemas of the newest Marvel One-Shot, the series of short films that usually accompany the Blu-ray releases of their feature films. In the past, we’ve had Agent Coulson adventures A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer and The Consultant, as well as the post-Avengers romp, Item 47. For the release of Iron Man 3, on September 24th, Marvel has included another One-Shot, this time following up with Captain America’s unrequited love interest, Agent Carter.

The film sees Carter (Hayley Atwell) assigned to desk duty in New York City after World War II. She’s not given a whole lot to do by her male co-workers or her chauvinist boss Agent Flynn (Bradley Whitford), who thinks women have no place in secret agentry. However, when an after-hours task is sent to her office, she’s the only one who can handle it. Will her activities get on the good side of S.H.I.E.L.D. founder Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper)?

Agent Carter is a very welcome return for the character, who was at the center of Marvel’s most tragic film ending, having Steve Rogers be frozen in ice for 60 years, seemingly never to see Peggy again. As a huge fan of that movie, I feel like lots more could have been done in the time period. And, now, there is! Atwell is great (as always) and gets to do a bit more of the action stuff than she was allowed in Captain America: The First Avenger.

The screening was accompanied by a small Q&A with Atwell, director and Co-President of Marvel Studios Louis D’Esposito, producer Brad Winderbaum, and One-Shot writer Eric Pearson. While too much information about the implications of this short on the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe were hush-hushed (as is the Marvel way), it was clear from the fan reaction that Peggy Carter, and female heroes in general, are incredibly welcome in the often male-centric superhero world.

Here’s hoping for more in that time period, because it’s pretty awesome. Look for Agent Carter to kick bad guy ass when the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray and DVD are released September 24th.
