Marvel Relaunches POWER MAN AND IRON FIST in 2016

The Luke Cage and Danny Rand team-up was born out of Marvel’s desire to keep both characters in a monthly book back in 1977. But the pairing of Cage, a.k.a. Power Man, and Rand, a.k.a Iron Fist, has proven to be one of the most unshakable bonds in the Marvel Universe. And in 2016, Power Man and Iron Fist are getting their own comic once again.

Marvel has revealed that Power Man and Iron Fist will launch with David Walker (Shaft) as the writer, with Sanford Greene (Runaways) taking on artist duties. In the Marvel Universe, it’s been many years since Luke Cage called himself Power Man, and since then he’s risen in prominence within the superhero world as a member of the New Avengers and the leader of the Mighty Avengers. Iron Fist has had a few solo series since the end of the original Power Man and Iron Fist comic, and he’s even served as an Avenger alongside Cage.

“That particular duo, they’re so iconic,” said Walker in an interview with Fast Company. “As a writer, you love interesting characters, and those two characters are so fun to delve into. They are the ultimate bromantic couple.”

Greene joked in that same interview that he’d “love to put the tiara in there” from Power Man’s ’70s era costume, before adding that he “did want to play off their classic looks. [The original costume] is a very highly regarded look, so I wanted to key in on some of that and make it look current, I wanted to play more into his new role as a husband and a father — more ‘business casual.'”

Naturally, the new series is partially a response to the upcoming Luke Cage and Iron Fist live-action series coming to Netflix. Mike Colter will make his debut as Cage in the Jessica Jones series, while the role of Iron Fist has yet to be cast.

In the meantime, though, make sure you get familiar with another Marvel dude set to hit the screen soon: The Punisher.

Marvel hasn’t set a date for the new Power Man and Iron Fist comic, but an early 2016 launch seems likely.
