Did the Russo Brothers Confirm Our MCU/X-Men Theory?

Following the unprecedented success of Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War looks like it may be an even bigger box office beast. The early tracking has Infinity War heading towards a $200 million opening weekend. It’s not surprising, considering it has almost every hero who has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. How could Marvel possibly top that? Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo may have inadvertently given away some long term plans. Today’s Nerdist News is examining whether the Russos have just confirmed our theory about how the X-Men and Fantastic Four could be added to the MCU.

Join our guest host, senior editor Dynamic Dan Casey, as he pours over the possibility of Marvel’s Secret Wars. During a recent interview with French outlet Linternaute, the Russos seemed to be very interested in making a Secret Wars movie with all of Marvel’s heroes once the Disney and Fox deal finally closes. There have been a few Secret Wars in Marvel’s comic book universe, but the core concept of the original storyline from 1984 and the modern event in 2015 found the heroes and villains transported to Battleworld, a patchwork planet made of many different worlds from across the cosmos.

We’ve previously postulated that a Secret Wars movie would be an ideal way to bring together the disparate X-Men and Fantastic Four films with the rest of the MCU.  Despite Fox’s best attempts, The X-Men and FF never really shared a universe, . Those characters simply don’t exist in the MCU as it currently stands. And they almost certainly won’t keep the same cast for the inevitable Marvel reboot movies.

Therefore, Secret Wars would be our only opportunity to entice the original big screen X-Men, perhaps even Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, to return one last time for the ultimate superhero showdown before the conclusion merges the universes into one cohesive whole. From that point on, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and even Deadpool would have a place in the MCU. Theoretically, it could potentially blow Infinity War out of the water in terms of scale and characters. We’d love to see it happen.
