Last year, writer Peter David returned to the character he helped launched way back in the early ’90s with the relaunch of Spider-Man:2099. Now that series is ending prematurely due to the events of Secret Wars, but worry not Marvel fans: the world of 2099 will continue as part of the Battleworld set of titles in Secret Wars: 2099 #1, with Spidey 2099’s same creative team of Peter David and Will Sliney at the helm. Although Spider-Man: 2099 ends in April, its storylines will carry over into Secret Wars: 2099 in May.
According to the press release from Marvel, “the patch-work surface of Marvelâs Secret Wars has now merged with Marvel 2099 and a new landscape has emerged as futuristic versions of your favorite characters, never-before-seen, make their first appearance and fold into the oncoming battle! Prepare to meet â the Avengers 2099 â Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Hercules! But in a world where megacorporations rule with an iron fist â what room is there for Earthâs Mightiest Heroes?” A world where megacorporations rule with an iron fist? Are we sure we’re talking about some far flung future here? (I kid. But not really.)
In an interview, writer Peter David says the Avengers of Secret Wars 2099 will be a corporate-sponsored team under the control of the super corporation Alchemax, and that Alchemax is “more or less running the United States in 2099.” Although not shown in the inital line-up of heroes, expect the futuristic Spider-Man to figure into all this somehow, as this will be a direct continuation from his own comic.
Wow … that looks really, really bad.
So basically Marvel is going cyberpunk. Definitely an interesting turn of events!
This might be the weirdest boob armor I have ever seen.
