Marvel Games Celebrates Its “Women of Power” By Adding More Female Characters

This month, Marvel Comics is running several variant covers featuring its “Women of Power.” And Marvel Games is fully embracing the event with a new initiative that brings over a dozen new female characters to almost all of their games in March.

Towards that end, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is adding Captain Marvel, Moonstone, and Poundcakes, a particularly obscure villainess who was created as a member of the Grapplers. Marvel Contest of Champions is getting the one-two punch of She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel, while Pepper Potts a.k.a. Rescue is joining Marvel Heroes 2016, and Thanos’ right-hand woman, Proxima Midnight is invading Marvel Future Fight. Both Spider-Man Unlimited and Avengers Academy will add several female characters, while Marvel Puzzle Quest will release “Women of Power” variant covers as well. But it looks like the popular Facebook game, Avengers Alliance isn’t taking part in this event.

“The beauty of Marvel is the width and breadth of our character lineup,” explained Marvel Games Creative Director Bill Rosemann. “The Women of Power event is a culmination of what’s been going on at Marvel and sort of the organic growth of their Women of Marvel movement from the podcast to different events.”

Marvel editor and Ms. Marvel co-creator Sana Amanat added, “We also want to make sure that we are cultivating a mission for the growth of these characters in a way that’s realistic and authentic, and it’s really more about having the Marvel universe expand and grow, and educating our fans and new audiences about the treasure chest of characters that exist that they might not traditionally know of as we do start expanding them in different areas.”

Of course, it’s going to be noted that Marvel TV and Marvel Studios lag far behind when it comes to the Marvel heroines. But as noted by Amanat, the “Women of Power” event is also about introducing these characters to a larger audience. That helps pave the way for them to make the eventual jump to other media.
