DOCTOR STRANGE May Have Found a Villain in HANNIBAL’s Mads Mikkelsen

Back in 2012, Mads Mikkelsen was Marvel’s top choice to portray Malekith the Accursed in Thor: The Dark World. However, Mikkelsen was forced to drop out of the second Thor movie to portray the iconic Hannibal Lecter on NBC’s Hannibal.

With the recent cancellation of Hannibal, it appears that the Marvel stars may have once again aligned for Mikkelsen! A new report from Variety states that Mikkelsen is in preliminary talks with Marvel Studios to portray one of the villains in Doctor Strange. While a formal offer has yet to be made, it is expected to be delivered to Mikkelsen in the near future.

But which role would Mikkelsen play? Chiwetel Ejiofor is already portraying Baron Mordo, the longtime nemesis of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Early reports from Marvel have indicated that the Cinematic Universe incarnation of Mordo may not be as evil as his comic book counterpart…at least in the first Doctor Strange film.

With Baron Mordo out of the equation, there are two natural Doctor Strange villains for the movie. First up, the Dread Dormammu! He’s the ruler of the Dark Dimension and the master of the Mindless Ones. Gamers may remember Dormammu’s appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Dormammu

The second likely villain would be Nightmare, the ruler of the Dream Dimension. Nightmare doesn’t have quite as high a profile as Dormammu, but Mikkelsen could bring just the right amount of charm and menace to the role.

Nightmare

Mikkelsen was recently added to the cast of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and we think we have a pretty good idea about whom he’s playing in that film.

The only other confirmed cast member for Doctor Strange is Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, with True Detective Season 2 star Rachel McAdams reportedly in negotiations to play the female lead. Doctor Strange will unleash its magic on moviegoers on November 4, 2016.
