Marvel Announces STAR WARS: POE DAMERON Ongoing Series

The character of X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, made an instant impression of audiences from the moment he was introduced in The Force Awakens. He did so first by not letting himself be intimidated by Kylo Ren, and then endearing us to him with his instant chemistry with ex-stormtrooper Finn (and of course, his little buddy BB-8). Although he didn’t have as much screen time as either of the other newcomers Rey or Finn, he made the most of what he did have, and earned his place as a beloved Star Wars character.

And now thankfully we won’t have to wait for Star Wars: Episode VIII to see more of our favorite new dashing X-Wing pilot. Marvel Comics has just announced that starting in April, we’ll get a new ongoing Star Wars: Poe Dameron title, written by Charles Soule (Star Wars: Lando) and drawn by Phil Noto (Star Wars: Chewbacca).

The new series will actually serve as a prequel to The Force Awakens, with Poe seeking out mysterious traveler Lor San Tekka (Max von Sydow) on the planet Jakku, looking for a key to finding the missing Luke Skywalker. Just who Lor San Tekka is and how he had a map to Luke’s location is one of the big mysteries of The Force Awakens, one this new comic might be able to answer it for fans.

Soule and Noto promise to flesh out Poe’s personality more in this series, and say to expect characters both new and old to appear throughout. Of course, Poe’s loyal droid BB-8 will be around too. Speaking with USA Today, Charles Soule says that this series will be akin to a Mission Impossible movie, but set in the Star Wars universe with Poe in the lead. “It’s silly not to explore the idea of a guy who grew up steeped in the Rebellion and the older Republic and all of those myths and legends,” Soule says. “If you think about it, he grew up the way we did, hearing all of these stories.”
