The Marvel Legacy era is coming to a close this May, but Marvel wants fans to know that a new beginning is right around the corner. As the first step in the “fresh start” initiative, Marvel is relaunching Avengers with a brand new series that brings back the classic lineup alongside some new faces. But more intriguingly, this will be the only Avengers comic going forward.
Via IGN, Jason Aaron and artist Ed McGuinness will be taking over the new Avengers ongoing series, which will be released in 18 installments over the span of the year. McGuinness will presumably be joined by other artists as well to help keep that intense schedule.
Notably, none of the current Avengers will be on the new team, which will instead include mainstays Captain America, Iron Man (Tony Stark), and the original Thor together for the first time in years. Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and She-Hulk will also join the crew, alongside part-time member Doctor Strange and the newest Ghost Rider, Robby Reyes.
While speaking with IGN, Aaron indicated that this series will also feature the Avengers of 1,000,000 B.C. from last year’s Marvel Legacy #1. Additionally, the story will jump around in time, much like Aaron’s celebrated run on Thor. While the story details are largely under wraps, Aaron indicated that the next big threat that will unite the two teams across time and space are the Dark Celestials, a branch of the all-powerful space gods who inhabit the Marvel Universe.
Finally, this news also means that the spinoff titles Uncanny Avengers, Occupy Avengers, and U.S. Avengers will not be returning once the Avengers: No Surrender event wraps up in April.
Avengers #1 will launch in May.
