Last year, ABC put Marvel’s Damage Control on its development slate as a potential comedy series for the network. Now, Damage Control isn’t the only Marvel comedy series that ABC might have on the docket. At the Television Critics Association press tour, ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee acknowledged that a second Marvel comedy series may currently be the works for the network.

While Lee didn’t offer any hints about which Marvel property was being considered, he did add tell IGN that “in the long term, we’d love it to be [on ABC]. We definitely want to do Marvel comedies as well as dramas and of course, as you know, we supply lots of dramas to Netflix.”

So what could Marvel and ABC have in mind as their next potential comedy series?

The most famous comedy series that Marvel ever produced was Steve Gerber’s Howard the Duck, which was already made into a feature film back in the ‘80s… a film that captured none of the original comic’s tone or humor, we might add. That said, Howard the Duck has made an appearance in the MCU (in the post-credits stinger for Guardians of the Galaxy), so he could very well show up again.

She-Hulk has also starred in her own comedic comic book series, most notably the incarnations written by John Byrne and Dan Slott. But given her connection to the Hulk, Marvel may not be looking in that direction. The recently launched Hellcat series has a light comedic tone, but considering that the series’ star Patsy “Trish” Walker is a leading character on Jessica Jones, that would seem to rule her out as well.

The next logical candidate is Squirrel Girl, another recently launched comedic comic book series. If Marvel TV has plans to use Squirrel Girl, this news would go a long way towards explaining why the company went out of its way to make it known that Squirrel Girl is no longer considered to be a mutant… which means that she wouldn’t be included among Fox’s X-Men related characters.

Lee also mentioned that Damage Control will be in contention for a slot on next season’s schedule. That show is based on the late Dwayne McDuffie’s comedy series that followed the misadventures of the people who have to rapidly clean up and repair buildings after massive superhuman battles.

“I haven’t read [Damage Control] yet,” said Lee. “I can’t wait to see it. We hope it’s going to be great.”
