Last weekend, Black Panther conquered the box office. Now, T’Challa’s next conquest will be outer space! As part of Marvel’s Fresh Start initiative, a new Black Panther ongoing series is coming this May and it’s going to send T’Challa on an adventure far beyond the Earth.
Via Marvel.com, Ta-Nehisi Coates will remain the writer of the relaunched Black Panther #1, and he will be joined by artist Daniel Acuña as they pick up one of the narrative threads hinted at in last year’s Marvel Legacy #1: the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda. And it was all founded in T’Challa’s name even though he never knew about it until now.
Prior to this story, T’Challa was one of the primary backers of Captain Marvel and Alpha Flight’s mission to expand humanity’s reach in space. But this empire goes far beyond that goal. Given Wakanda’s technical superiority, it’s not inconceivable that the nation mastered spaceflight long before the rest of the world. However, Marvel’s official description states that the Wakandan Empire is located “across the vast Multiverse.” So it may not even originate in the default Marvel timeline.
It’s worth noting that the alien races of the Marvel Universe have previously vocalized their fears that humanity would become an interstellar empire that would overrun them all. If the Wakandan Empire emerges as a major force in the galaxy, then it’s likely that there’s going to be some major push back from the other races. That’s a problem that even the Black Panther would have trouble dealing with.
Black Panther #1 will be released in May.
