Marvel Announces RED WOLF Ongoing Series For December

During Secret Wars, the Native American hero of the Old West known as Red Wolf made his return in the 1872 miniseries. But in the All-New, All-Different Marvel relaunch, Red Wolf will once again headline his own title.

Marvel has announced that the Red Wolf ongoing series will launch with the creative team of writer Nathan Edmondson and artist Dalibor Talajić. Additionally, Jeffrey Veregge will consult on Red Wolf and provide the designs and cover art. As noted on Mashable, Veregge is a member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe of Kingston, Washington. Veregge’s input on the title should help the new incarnation of Red Wolf more accurately reflect Native American culture than some of the earlier versions.

Red Wolf was created by Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema in 1970. The first Red Wolf used in the Marvel Universe was named William Talltrees, but several characters have taken up the mantle in the subsequent decades. In 1972, the very first Red Wolf ongoing series followed two men in the Old West who were Red Wolf before William Talltrees: Johnny Wakely and Thomas Thunderhead.

Unlike the last Red Wolf series, the new book will firmly take place in the present as the new Red Wolf steps up to become the guardian of the American Southwest.

“We don’t have a lot of characters who appear in the Southwest,” explained Marvel editor Jake Thomas. “He’s going to be a little bit of a man apart out there.”

Red Wolf #1 will be released in December 2015.
