Martin Freeman’s THE OFFICE: Middle Earth Sketch Was Actually Perfect

Sometimes, everything is beautiful and nothing hurts—particularly when we are given great gifts from on high. Which is exactly what Martin Freeman’s standout Saturday Night Live sketch was: a Tolkien gift of the David Brent-iest order.

Indeed, the one thing we never knew we needed in life is finally here: The Office Middle Earth, a mash-up of Freeman’s two most iconic roles (sorry, Sherlock fans): Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit and Tim Canterbury from the UK iteration of The Office. We know hyperbole on the Internet is so passe, but this sorta warrants it, no?

Honestly the whole thing is worth it for Taran Killam’s Gollum impression alone.

Bobby Moynihan’s “Ricky Gervais as David Brent as Gandalf” bit is spot-on. Unless, of course, he’s doing Gandalf as Ricky Gervais’ David Brent in which case, eh! Wizard might need to do a lil bit of work on his impression game, is all. But ultimately, theirs is a fate unfurled just as it was foretold—I mean, what else is one supposed to do with their time after saving Middle-earth? Obviously—I mean obviously—the only option Bilbo, Gandalf, Gollum, Legolas (Kyle Mooney), and Tauriel (Kate McKinnon) have now that the battle of five armies is over, is to take up office jobs. Even folks in the Shire need to make ends meet. Someone has to be Lord of the Reams, after all.

Guess this means that Freeman’s just going to have to come back and host SNL again real soon, because we’re going to need a follow-up to this.

What’d you think of the sketch? Let us know in the comments.

The UK office was the original. Calling it an iteration takes away fron that.

  3. Jim says:

The UK office was the original, it is unnecessarily unclear to call it an iteration.
