Mark Millar is unquestionably one of the most successful writers in the comic book industry, with several popular creator-owned titles including Kick-Ass, Wanted, Nemesis, and Kingsman: The Secret Service, most of which have already been adapted as films. Millarâs characters are usually very cynical heroes, if theyâre even heroes at all.
But thatâs going to change with Huck, Millarâs new six-issue miniseries with artist Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire). Millar describes the title character of Huck as âCaptain America meets Forrest Gump. Heâs just a nice guy in a very classic mould.â Unlike some other superheroes, Huck never left his small town and he doesnât really bother to hide what he can do from his friends and neighbors. He just does good deeds on a daily basis, and in return, the town tries to protect his secret.
While that explains what Huck does, it doesnât explain what he is or how he gained his fantastic abilities. According to an exclusive interview with Millar on ComicBook.com, that mystery will be one of the primary storylines of the Huck miniseries.
âIt’s the mystery for the first series,â Millar told the website. âIt’s good to have a mystery, but not one that goes on too long. Like a TV show, you hate it if the mystery is unanswered by season four, or if it’s something you don’t get until the very end. It’s the same with comics. Halfway through this run, I’d like you to find out what he is and what he’s all about. And then, how that changes afterward. But that’s just all part of the fun of it.â
âI thought it was really interesting is to take a character who’s really pure, and then put them in these kinds of situations,â added Millar. âThis is a guy who, for his entire life, has been doing good deeds completely under the radar in his town. Then, at the end of the first issue, it all just goes wrong. It throws him in a world he wasn’t expecting. Suddenly the people who are part of his past start to come into his present and a whole new kind of drama opens up. It’s still very much a big dramatic comic book story, but just with the kind of character you probably haven’t seen in a long time.â

Millar noted that the first Huck miniseries has been finished, and also said that he and Albuquerque have two more Huck stories in mind that would be told in two additional six-issue miniseries.
Huck #1 will be published by Image Comics, which will release the book on Wednesday, November 18.
