Margaret Qualley Will Star in DEATH NOTE

Write this name down in your notebook and don’t forget it: Margaret Qualley has signed on to portray the female lead in Death Note, the live-action, American adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s classic manga series.

While the initial reports identified Qualley’s sister—Rainey Qualley—as the star of Death Note, the role actually went to Margaret Qualley. The Death Note manga was a 13 volume saga that followed Light Yagami, a high school student who found a supernatural notebook that allows its user to kill anyone simply by writing their name inside it.

With this newfound power, Light attempts to eliminate the worst of humanity, but this quest puts him in the crosshairs of the intense and enigmatic Detective L. Qualley could potentially play Misa Amane—one of Light’s primary allies—but it’s probably a safe assumption that some of these names will change in the new adaptation.

Qualley is best known for playing Jill Garvey on HBO’s The Leftovers and for her co-starring role in Palo Alto. Qualley is also starring in the upcoming film, The Nice Guys. The male lead of the American Death Note film will be Nat Wolff, an actor who has been dating Qualley in real life.

Death Note debuted in 2003 and quickly became one of the most popular manga series in the world before being adapted as an anime series, a live-action TV series, and three live-action films in Japan. You’re Next director Adam Wingard is slated to helm the American Death Note movie for Warner Bros., but there is not currently a release date.
