First Song from DEATH NOTE Musical Has Made It to the Internet

Death Note has been one of the most popular mangas, both in and outside of Japan, since it originally hit shelves back in 2003. Not only did the manga itself run for three years, it also spawned a wildly popular anime, three video games, two live action film adaptations, a pending American remake, and now it will have its own musical to add to that list.

Frank Wildhorn, the Broadway composer behind such hits as Jekyll & Hyde and Bonnie & Clyde is currently working on bringing Death Note to the world of musical theater with the help of Jack Murphy. Wildhorn will be composing the show’s music, while Murphy will tackle the lyrics.

For those unfamiliar with the anime, Death Note tells the story of a young man named Light Yagami who discovers an otherworldly notebook. Whenever Light writes someone’s name in the notebook, that person dies within 24 hours. Soon Light finds himself playing judge, jury, and executioner with whomever he desires as he sets out on his own journey of justice as the vigilante known as “Kira.” Light’s newfound power does not go unnoticed, though. A brilliant FBI agent known only as L takes on the mission of discovering who Kira is, and the two become entwined in a battle of wits. (Editor’s Note: Seriously, just go watch it. It’s on Netflix.)

The first completed song for the show has been posted online and features Broadway veterans Jeremy Jordan (Smash, The Last Five Years) and Jerrod Spector (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical singing the parts of Kira and L. Fans can check the track out here. While there is no word as to whether the show will make its way to New York City or not, the show opens in South Korea later this year, under the direction of Tamiya Kuriyama.

  1. Jake says:

The information about death note here is incorrect L is not an FBI agent and the victim of the deathnote dies within 40 seconds and there have been 3 live action adaptations

    • R says:

technically the 3rd death note film was a spin off and the main story of that one has nothing to do with kira or the death note itself.

  2. taybat says:

    This actually sounds legit.

  3. Markie says:

I was so excited reading this until I saw all the mistakes. Its not 24 hours its 40 seconds, and L is a private/consulting detective, not an FBI agent. Light’s first innocent victims were FBI agents from America, namely Ray Penber. Also there are three live action film adaptions not one, and two non manga books. Though honestly I can’t think of a series more deserving of a musical than this one. Its beautiful.

Whelp, guess I have to go to Korea since there’s currently not a plan for an American version 😛
