Creating Your Custom Lightsaber Has Never Looked Easier or More Impressive

For almost as long as there have been Star Wars fans, customized lightsabers have filled the gap for anyone who wanted to feel that they were one with the Force. And while the makeshift lightsabers have come a long way from using modified broomsticks, the basic principle remains true today. And as demonstrated in the latest episode of Rooster Teeth‘s Master & Apprentice series, sometimes an official lightsaber toy can be used to make something even more impressive.

First brought to our attention via Laughing Squid, veteran production designer Marcus Gray LaPorte and his cosplay loving apprentice, Adam Ellis, took the time to carefully explain the steps of their lightsaber creation process. Both men came to this build with an idea in mind for their weapons: LaPorte wanted a lightsaber that resembled the ones used by the Knights of Ren, while Ellis wanted something worthy of a Jedi. But as Ellis noted in the video, sometimes it’s important to learn when to let go of the original plans in order to move forward when the design can’t be rendered as envisioned. Ellis and LaPorte also spent a significant amount of time picking out the parts for their weapons and using metallic paint to weather the finish and make the lightsabers seem more realistic.

The end results left both men happy with their efforts, and the lightsabers truly looked professional. Naturally, LaPorte and Ellis couldn’t wait to put on some cosplay and test their creations in a greenscreen location that resembled Bespin. But LaPorte had a bit of a mishap before a lightsaber duel could really get started.
