A Dyson bladeless fan is pretty neat and works super well, but if you want one for yourself, it’ll put you out a few hundred dollars. Fortunately for the handy among us, YouTuber Rulof Maker has found a way to create his own, and it was made with components that should be relatively easy to get your hands on.
Technically, bladeless fans aren’t exactly bladeless: They still use traditional fan blades to create an air current. But one of these fans uses those blades to actually take advantage of the still air around it. We’ll get to how that works in a second (and Rulof Maker briefly touches on it in the video above), but despite the seemingly complicated science behind this type of fan, it appears to be pretty easy to make with just a bit of knowhow… and a big water jug, a flower pot, and a few other parts.
As James Dyson, the inventor of the bladeless fan, explains in this second video, the bladeless fan is designed to function much like an airplane wing. The small fan in the base of the device blows air over the wing in such a way that it creates negative pressure, which pulls in still air from behind the fan and essentially multiplies the amount of air movement the small inner fan blades create. This is why Dyson calls the bladeless fan an “air multiplier.”
