During the recently wrapped ninth season of Doctor Who, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams made four appearances as Ashildr/Lady Me. And while the season finale left the door open for Lady Me to eventually return to the series, Williams has a bigger role in mind: the Doctor herself!
At the Evening Standard British Film Awards, Williams was asked if she wanted to take over the role of the Doctor from Peter Capaldi. She said âyes,â but with a few conditions. âIt would be cool, but right now Iâm locked into some other things. I think a female doctor would be incredible. I think a black doctor would be incredible. Iâm all for Idris Elba â but if not Iâll take it for the team and do it!â (Her mention of Elba is in reference to popular fan campaigns to win the Luther star the coveted Doctor role.)
Williamsâ âother thingsâ include her movie projects (dramas The Forest of Hands and Teeth and The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea)Â and the upcoming seventh season of Game of Thrones, which will be filmed later this year. HBO has yet to confirm the previously rumored two season renewal for Game of Thrones, but itâs gonna happen.
The unique shooting schedule for Game of Thrones may actually work in Williamsâ favor, if she gets the opportunity to become the Thirteenth Doctor. Because most of the Game of Thrones cast films their scenes in various international locations, their screentime over 10 episodes isnât the equivalent of appearing in 10 episodes of a more traditional drama. Williams was already able to squeeze in her Doctor Who appearances with her current Game of Thrones schedule.
By the time that Doctor Who returns in 2017, Game of Thrones will be heading into production of its eighth and potentially final season. If Game of Thrones wraps at that point, it would free up Williams just as Capaldi potentially makes his exit.
Within the context of Doctor Who, there’s even a reason why the next Doctor would subconsciously choose Lady Me’s physical appearance. The Twelfth Doctor took the appearance of Lobus Caecilius from “The Fires of Pompeii” to remind himself of his commitment to saving lives. If he became Lady Me’s physical double, perhaps it would be the Doctor’s way of using Lady Me’s backstory as a cautionary tale for herself.
That said, Williams would probably face some stiff competition to be the first female Doctor. Both Helen Mirren and Hayley Atwell have also expressed interest in being the first Time Lady to headline Doctor Who.
