M.I.A. and Janelle Monae Performed Together Last Night Via Hologram

Last night, April 3, Janelle Monae and M.I.A. shared stages in both Los Angeles and New York simultaneously, because holograms.

According to a press release via Pitchfork, the duets by the artists were “the first hologram performance with integrated video mapping.” The event “utilizes 3D projection mapping to add layered depth of field perception with animated graphic content, the result of which will be an electric never-before-seen 3D bi-coastal performance.”

What is crazy is that this probably would have sounded laughably ludicrous to a room full of scientists in like 1997. Well, who is laughing now, turn of the century scientists? I’ll tell you whose laughing: the holographic versions of yourselves from the future–that’s who!

(RIP Tupac and Tupac’s Hologram. The future is a sad, mysterious, holographic place.)
