LUKE CAGE Is “Just Getting Started” in New Series Trailer

Who is Luke Cage? If you’ve seen the Jessica Jones series on Netflix, you may think you know everything about Mike Colter‘s bulletproof hero. But later this month, Cage’s complete story—the before and the after of the events of Jessica Jones—will unfold over 13 episodes. Judging from the latest video released by Netflix, even Cage’s closest allies and enemies don’t fully understand the heart of the man who will be Harlem’s hero.

There are some minor spoilers for the first season of Luke Cage in the new video, but it serves as a good reminder of where the title character is in his life and why he’s avoiding Jessica after the formation of their intense emotional bond. The updated version of Cage’s origin is also glimpsed, as he suffers behind prison bars for a crime that he didn’t commit. The essentials of his comic book origin are still intact, including the experiment gone wrong that gave Cage superpowers. But in this incarnation, Luke actually confesses to Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) that he sees himself as a freak—something readers will recognize as new.

The video also established Mahershala Ali’s Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes as Cage’s personal nemesis for the season. Cottonmouth sees himself as the king of Harlem, and he doesn’t quite grasp that Cage is acting out of altruism instead of self-interest. Note that, in this clip, Cottonmouth actually thinks that Cage is after his crown. Cottonmouth even mocks Cage’s attempts to be heroic. But, as Cage himself says, he’s “just getting started.”

Luke Cage season one will premiere on Friday, September 30 on Netflix.
