Last month, Netflix revealed the first glimpse of its Lost in Space reboot, which is noticeably much darker than the series Irwin Allen created in the ’60s. In this incarnation, the Robinsons were part of a larger group of colonists who were hoping to find a new home in the far reaches of space. Netflix has dropped a new extended trailer, which depicts the disaster that left the Robinsons hopelessly stranded. The new footage also introduces a modern take on the Robot, Will Robinson’s constant companion from the show’s original incarnation. But this version of the Robot is more of an enigma, and it may be the first proof of alien intelligence the Robinsons have ever seen.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the mystery of who and what the Robot is will unfold over the course of the 10-episode first season. John Robinson (Toby Stephens) clearly doesn’t trust the Robot, at least in these clips, despite the connection it has made with John’s son Will (Maxwell Jenkins). The trailer also establishes the bond between Will and his sister, Judy (Taylor Russell).
The infamous Dr. Smith also makes her debut in this trailer, with Parker Posey stepping into the role that Jonathan Harris created on the original series. It’s unclear if this version of Smith is still the saboteur who was responsible for the Robinsons’ predicament, but Maureen Robinson (Molly Parker) and her family should definitely watch their backs.
Lost in Space will hit Netflix on Friday, April 13.
