We’ve been in the tank for the nightmare-inducing podcast Lore for a while now. And now that the podcast is turning into a television show on Amazon, we’ve gotten to see their team perform a lobotomy and explain electroshock therapy while eating a banana, all in the name of 21st century October fun. But before the show makes its debut on Friday the 13th, we’ll also be able to sink our teeth into a new tie-in book: The World of Lore: Monstrous Creatures, which features several spooky stories that never made it onto the podcast.
Naturally, Lore host Aaron Mahnke narrates the audiobook version, and we got our hands on a clip from one of the stories that features a thoughtful gift that all grown children would love in their bedroom.
I love those little storytelling moments where the familiar slips into the fantastical. Where you’re already engaged in a great campfire tale only to realize that you know exactly which creature or boogeyman they’re talking about. There are so many baddies floating around the cultural atmosphere whose names we know but whose origin stories we might not.
Lore has a great talent for finding those hidden details about famous folklore and sharing them with the world. In this case, it’s also good at painting a compelling picture about a doll named Annabelle that is having her own cultural moment. The same goes for the Warrens, who have jumped from real life to horror film screens (which is Lore‘s sweet spot) with the Conjuring movies. Now, how much do you really know about them and their work?
Mahnke’s storytelling seems to continually ask that question about all sorts of dark tales. From vampires to sinister things that may have happened in your own neighborhood not so many years ago.
What’s your favorite campfire story? Let us know, and check out The World of Lore: Monstrous Creatures when it hits shelves on October 10th.
