Look at These ADVENTURE TIME Storyboards Because I Don’t Know!

No need to travel to very distant lands to see art from Adventure Time. I mean, you can do that if you want, but you now have the option of ordering Adventure Time: The Art of Ooo from the internet or your favorite book retailer.

This is the first book that explores the making of the world where Jake and Finn go on quests and punch monsters in their faces, and it sounds like it contains treasure. In this case, treasure means information and art.

After you read an introduction by some guy named Guillermo del Toro, you can browse through character sketches, background paintings, and comments from the very creative and talented people who work behind the scenes making Ooo interesting and beautiful — people like Adam Muto. He’s a former storyboard artist on Adventure Time, and has worked his way up to the title of co-executive producer and showrunner on the animated series.

Back to the storyboards though, you’ll see plenty of them in the upcoming art book. As you can see from the above image, the story is told through tons (official count) of teeny tiny thumbnails. Storyboards show how an episode will unfold before it’s taken to the animators.

Seeing process stuff like this always makes me feel like I’m learning some big secret, and I love picturing how these sketchy thumbnails of Finn the Human and Jake the Dog get fully rendered and turned into a completed episode. I don’t know if you all know this, but animation is pretty neat.
